The constant question of claiming that we are Muslims, is asked within the society today, yet we are often forgetting that Muslim is a verb, and there are certain actions and prerequisites one must adhere to in order to fall into the Muslim category, yet even then we cannot be sure.
Below is an Ayah from the Glorious Quran, which concludes this very statement, Allah SWT is reminding us that the term was one we should be asking for, not have certainty that we have claimed it.
Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
This is the Dua of Ibrahim (AS) asking Allah SWT to make him Muslim, therefore we conclude that its definitely a state one enters rather than a religion.
